The Germans, who have less than a year to develop a tournament-ready squad, needed two late goals to tie Ukraine 3-3 last week before falling to Poland 1-0 on Friday. Since their shocking World Cup group-stage loss in December of last year.

The four-time world champions have only won one of their past five games. They have also only triumphed in three of their previous 11 games.

While Malick Thiaw, a 21-year-old defender from Germany, was superb in defence, the Colombians were much more motivated in attack, forcing Germany custodian Marc Andre ter Stegen to make a number of excellent saves in the first half.

The home team frequently struggled to play the ball out of their own half despite having more than 65% of the possession, failing to manage a single shot on goal throughout the duration of the first half.

Emre Can of Germany lost control, and Cuadrado whipped in a cross for Diaz to head past Ter Stegen to give Colombia the lead. The hosts temporarily picked up the pace, but their defence remained weak.

Niclas Fuellkrug was brought in as a centre striker, but this did little to help the situation up front. A handball by Joshua Kimmich offered the visitors an opportunity to extend their advantage, and Cuadrado converted the penalty.
