‘Overthinker’ tag on R Ashwin deprived him of leadership chances

‘Overthinker’ tag on R Ashwin deprived him of leadership chances

Ravichandran Ashwin opens up about the setback after WTC snub

Ravichandran Ashwin: Apart from being the number one spinner, witty and humorous, Ravichandran Ashwin is also an overthinker. While it is five days since India’s World Test Championship (WTC) hammering against Australia Ashwin, who was dropped from the playing XI still thinks about not finding a place in the XI despite being the ranked world number in Test cricket. The off-spinner regrets not continuing to be a batter as horses for courses policy is applicable for only pacers and spinners.

India played four pacers in the WTC Final despite the Oval pitch aiding spinner. With India playing Ravindra Jadeja as the sole spinner in the Test series in England during the 2021-22 series, Rohit Sharma & Rahul Dravid struck with the southpaw in the summit finale against Australia.

“It’s a hard question to answer, right? Because we are standing right after the WTC Final. I would have loved to play because I have played a part in us getting there. Even in the last final I got four wickets and bowled really well,” Ashwin said to Indian Express.

“To look inwards and say, ‘okay, somebody is judging me is foolishness’. I think I’m not at the stage of my career to think what others are thinking of me. I know what I am capable of. If I’m not good at something, I’ll be my first best critic. And I will work on it and I’m not someone who will sit on my laurels. I’ve never been made that way. So to think of who’s judging me is immaterial.”

Ravichandran Ashwin: Overthinker tag one of the reasons for not getting leadership – Ashwin

Despite being in the team for more than a decade, Ashwin was never considered a leader. Ashwin feels it is because of the overthinker tag that Captaincy eluded him.

“I’m a lot more chilled than I used to be. A lot more relaxed in my life than I ever have been. Sitting here today, I realize how much of a toll it had taken on me mentally to the point where I was traumatized. But I am very glad to have come through that and discovered a new me.

A lot of people marketed me and positioned me that I am an overthinker. A person who will get 15-20 matches on the go doesn’t have to be mentally overthinking. A person who knows that they will get only two games will be traumatized and will be overthinking because it’s my job. It’s my journey. So this is what suits me.”

The thorough professional that Ashwin has moved on the WTC final setback is currently playing Tamil Nadu Premier League. Ashwin also feels that the intensity and focus has helped him play 92 Test matches for India. The learning never stops for the off-spinner as he focuses on the newer goals.
