With a 4-0 hammering of Group C underdogs Malta, Trent Alexander-Arnold scored a magnificent goal and assisted on another as England maintained their unbeaten start to the Euro 2024 qualifying round.
Alexander-Arnold, who was given the No. 10 jersey and was moved into midfield by Gareth Southgate, put on a player-of-the-match display, scoring the second goal in spectacular fashion.
Bukayo Saka was earlier let free by his excellent pass over the top of the Malta defence; Ferdinando Apap then guided Saka’s cross into his own net to score the game’s first goal (8). The third goal, his 56th for the Three Lions, was scored from the penalty spot (31).

England’s all-time top scorer Harry Kane, who eclipsed Wayne Rooney’s record in March, also scored the fourth goal (83), which was converted by replacement Callum Wilson from another penalty.
In an unremarkable second half, Kane missed a chance to score his second goal of the game; his attempted chip over the custodian drifted wide, but England finally scored the fourth.
Following a VAR review, Malta’s Steve Borg was heavily punished for touching Wilson’s attempted cross, allowing the Newcastle striker to score his second England goal from the penalty spot.
On his debut, Eze had a chance to join in the fun, but his low shot was stopped. Malta, the FIFA rated 171st team in the world, was unable to even muster a shot, giving Southgate’s defenders a peaceful night.
