WFI Election: The IOA has announced the WFI elections amid the ongoing Wrestlers Protest between wrestlers and Brijbhushan Saran Singh. The elections to the Wrestling Federation of India will be held on July 4. Before this there will be a process of nomination. However, InsideSport has learned from a WFI source that the wrestlers have put forth their choice for the post of WFI President during a meeting with the Sports Minister.

A WFI source told InsideSport on the condition of anonymity, “On the same day the wrestlers had a several-hour meeting with Anurag Thakur, the wrestlers also revealed their preferred name for the post of WFI president.”
“The wrestlers have endorsed the name of BJP Haryana chief OP Dhankar for the post of president,” said the source. However, there is no official confirmation about it yet.
India’s star wrestlers have leveled sexual harassment allegations against WFI’s Brij Bhushan Singh. His tenure as the Speaker ended in March and he had completed 12 years. The WFI elections were announced on 7 May. After this, the Sports Ministry termed it as ‘invalid’ and constituted a two-member ad hoc committee to conduct fresh elections in 45 days.
The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) on Monday announced the date of the election and appointed Justice (Retd) Mahesh Mittal Kumar, former chief justice of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court, as the returning officer to conduct the election. Wrestlers Protest: IOA ad-hoc committee to conduct WFI Elections on July 4 The Special General Meeting (WFI SGM) of the Wrestling Federation has been called on 4th July. WFI has 25 affiliated units, covering the Union Territories of Chandigarh and Delhi. Each state unit may send two representatives and each representative shall have one vote. Therefore, there will be 50 votes in the electoral college for WFI elections. On June 7, in talks with the government, the wrestlers postponed their protest till June 15. Then there was a long talk of about six hours between the wrestlers and Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur. In the conversation, it was decided that by June 15, the Delhi Police would file a charge sheet in the case against the wrestlers.
