Red Bull Boss Christian Horner Confident of Team’s Dominance Amidst Rising Mercedes F1 Hype

Christian Horner pointed out the fact that changing a significant part of their car must have eaten up their development budget by a lot.

The Mercedes F1 team brought a ton of upgrades ahead of the Monaco GP and in two races so far, they have worked wonders. Most recently in the Spanish GP at Barcelona, Silver Arrows achieved their first double podium finish of the season, with Hamilton leading Russell. The gap at the finish line between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton was 23 seconds. This evidence shows that Red Bull is still significantly faster on the grid.

However, one thing is for sure, on a day when things don’t work out for the Red Bull duo, Silver Arrows has a real chance to get a win. Let’s look at the major changes in W-1 4. The side pods are now much more expansive than before. The narrow vertical intake for the radiators has been replaced by more conventional wide horizontal openings. Another significant change is that of the front suspension, which appears to have a greater degree of anti-dive built into its geometry.

The team later brought minor upgrades specifically for the Spanish GP as well. The most evident result, as it stands, is that the Silver Arrow W-14 is conveniently outpacing Aston Martin and Ferrari now. However, Red Bull boss Christian Horner is not too concerned by these developments.

Red Bull boss plays down Mercedes F1 upgrade hype

Red Bull and Mercedes are considered arch-rivals in the world of F1. The 2021 season which was arguably the most exciting we have had in decades was a prime specimen of this intense rivalry. However, these past two seasons have been the dominant show for Red Bull after Mercedes got their car concept wrong.

Now, as the silver arrows are eyeing a return back on the top, fans are hoping to see another one of those Red Bull-Mercedes fights. However, to their disappointment, the Red Bull boss is not in agreement with this hype. The Briton pointed out the fact that changing a significant part of their car must have eaten up their development budget by a lot.

“For sure they’ve made a step. But they’ve introduced pretty much a B-spec car, so they must have used a significant proportion of their development budget on that. And I think that when I look at the gap at the end of the race, it is very similar to where it was in Bahrain,” said Horner as reported by Autosport.

“All that is happening in the running order behind us seems to vary from race to race,” added the Red Bull boss.
