The main event saw the two-division champion Amanda Nunes put her bantamweight title on the line against Irene Aldana.
Nunes, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest female fighters of all time, was dominant from start to finish, using her superior striking and grappling to control Aldana throughout the fight. Nunes won via unanimous decision, cementing her status as the top fighter in the women’s bantamweight division.
But it was the co-main event that really stole the show. Charles Oliveira, the former lightweight champion, faced off against Beneil Dariush in a highly anticipated matchup.
Dariush started strong, controlling the fight on the ground and landing some heavy shots. But Oliveira weathered the storm and managed to get back to his feet, where he unleashed a barrage of strikes that put Dariush away and earned Oliveira a TKO victory in the first round.
Another highlight of the night was Aiemann Zahabi’s KO victory over Aoriqileng in the first round. Zahabi, the younger brother of famed MMA coach Firas Zahabi, put on a striking clinic, landing a devastating left hook that sent Aoriqileng crashing to the canvas. The crowd went wild as Zahabi celebrated his third straight victory in the UFC.
Other notable wins on the card included Mike Malott’s submission victory over Adam Fugitt, Dan Ige’s hard-fought decision win over Nate Landwehr, and Marc-Andre Barriault’s dominant decision victory over Eryk Anders.
Overall, UFC 289 delivered some monster knockouts from Oliveira, Zahabi and Malott and a clear title defense from Amanda Nunes in a card full of action from start to finish. The finishes sent the crowd home happy after an evening of top-level MMA.
