Australia have declared at 270/8. With Alex Carey smashing an unbeaten 66 and Mitchell Starc hammering a quickfire 41, Australia have ended up with a 443-run lead. India will now have to be at their record-breaking best to ensure they win the game or at least draw the IND vs AUS Test. The Oval is not the best venue in terms of fourth innings chases, with no team chasing above 250 in the last 60 years. The highest run chase at the venue is 263, which came way back in 1902. The highest fourth innings total however is 429 at the ground with India scoring the same in 1979. There have been only two instances of 400+ scores in the final innings at The Oval.

India could only muster 296 batting first at the Oval. In their 2018 Test against England, Kl Rahul and Rishabh Pant had scored centuries to take India to 345 in their chase of 464. Rohit Sharma will hope that his batters can once again stand tall and make life difficult for the Australia bowlers.

India’s highest test chase came back in 1976 in Port of Spain against the West Indies. Sunil Gavaskar scored a fighting 221 at the top of the order to help India chase down the target on the final day.
