England cricketer Jonny Bairstow revealed that he has become a father for the first time ahead of this summer’s Ashes. The wicketkeeper-batter shared on Instagram on Wednesday that his partner had just given birth to a baby boy. Bairstow posted picture of himself pushing a pram, with the note: “Delighted to share with you that my girlfriend and I have welcomed Edward Bairstow into the world! What an amazing time ahead! They are both doing brilliantly.”
Following his recovery from a terrible leg break that kept him out of play for more than six months, Bairstow has finally reclaimed his spot in England’s Test squad. Last week, he took part in England’s comprehensive 10-wicket victory over Ireland, and his off-the-field life has also been going well. Bairstow, who shone for England last year, will be expecting to shine in this summer’s Ashes.
The good news for Bairstow comes only a few days before the Ashes begin at Edgbaston on Friday, June 16. He had a successful summer last year, scoring four hundreds against New Zealand and India to spark England’s comeback in the longest version of the game under Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum.
It was always a formality that he would return to the side when fit again since he had already cemented his position as England’s key man at the start of the ‘Bazball’ era. England will be hoping he can maintain his incredibly aggressive attitude with the bat against Australia after being handed further responsibility this summer by replacing Ben Foakes. While England has not won the Ashes since 2015, they have won 11 of their last 13 games under Stokes, giving them momentum going into the five-match series.
