India initially selected KS Bharat and KL Rahul for the WTC final roster given Rishabh Pant’s injury. However, the BCCI selection committee chose Kishan as a stand-in when Rahul was ruled out. Both Kishan and Bharat were part of the India squad in the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy series against Australia. However, Bharat was preferred over Kishan – who is yet to play a Test match for India. Bharat has played in four Tests.

Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting also believes that India should give Ishan Kishan his debut cap in the crucial WTC final as he offers a little extra flair. “I’d pick Ishan Kishan. If you want to be crowned the world champion, you have to win the game. Hence, why there is a sixth day that has been added to give both teams the best chance of a result. I’d be going with Ishan Kishan because I think he just provides that little bit of X-factor that you might need when pushing for a win in a Test match,” told ICC.

Ishan, 24, has appeared in 48 first-class matches and scored 2985 runs at an average of 38.76, including six hundreds and 16 half-centuries.
