India vs Afghanistan series is all set to be postponed to September. The series was supposed to be played in June ahead of West Indies tour. However, players’ workload management, monsoon as well as the absence of a broadcaster have forced BCI’s hands. There were talks of converting the ODI series to a T20 one but that plan is also on hold for now. Rohit Sharma & Co will get a two-week rest instead before leaving for a month-long Windies tour in late June. Rashid Khan & Co will instead tour Bangladesh. India and Afghanistan were set to play a three-game ODI series between the WTC Final and the India tour of West Indies. With only a month’s gap between the two commitments, the BCCI is concerned about workload and players’ rest. Rohit Sharma’s side will also participate in the Asia Cup with the schedule to be announced soon, while the World Cup 2023 is also not far away.

With Jasprit Bumrah, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul out with injuries, BCCI is cautious not to stretch the players. BCCI is rethinking the series as a whole but has kept the reasons close to its chest.

One of the major hurdles is also the broadcast rights, with the deal with Diseny+Star expiring. While an interim arrangement can be sought, it remains to be seen whether the Indian cricket board can fetch the right price.

Instead of the June window, the series will now be held in September before or after the homes series against Australia. It will provide both teams to have some quality practice ahead of official warm-up games before World Cup 2023.

A final decision on the same will be taken in the coming days. Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) president Mirwais Ashraf is currently in India and will attend the IPL 2023 Final in Ahmedabad. It is a busy next few days for the top brass of BCCI, with a key number of decisions to be announced.
