Vinicius Jr: Things are getting from bad to worse for Vinicius Jr. In the game against Valencia in La Liga, the Brazilian winger was subjected to racial abuse from the Mestalla. The game had to be suspended for 10 minutes and then Vinicius was sent off as well. After putting out a post condemning La Liga and Javier Tebas as racism continues to be an annoying issue in Spain, the winger has faced more flak. Vinicius Jr has released a damning statement insisting the racial and immoral abuse he has received while playing for Real Madrid this season is ‘inhuman’. The Brazilian winger has received racist chants and cruel comments on ten different occasions in La Liga, with racist shouting at Valencia on Sunday providing another abhorrent example. He has also received death threats from opposing fans at three of Madrid’s away matches this season.
Vinicius’ La Liga future is in doubt as the player apparently assesses his position in Spain while still committed to Madrid, who have filed a lawsuit alleging a “hate crime” at the Mestalla. Since the distressing events that occurred at Valencia on Sunday, the 22-year-old superstar has largely been quiet, but he has now retaliated against those who have tried to make his life miserable.
Vinicius Jr Statement
In support of the footballer, his native Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, shut off the illumination of the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue on Corvocado. Vinicius posted a picture of the statue bathed in darkness with a statement saying, ‘Black and imposing. Christ the Redeemer was just like that. An action of solidarity that moves me. But I want, above all, to inspire and bring more light to our struggle.’
He continued, ‘I really appreciate all the chain of affection and support I’ve received in the last few months. Both in Brazil and around the world. I know exactly who’s who. Count on me because the good ones are the majority and I won’t give up.’
His ended his statement by saying, ‘I have a purpose in life and if I have to suffer more and more so that future generations don’t go through similar situations, I’m ready and prepared.’
Vinicius Jr Video Post
The Real Madrid winger also posted a video online, wherein we can see all the separate incidents of abuse he has been made to suffer. He accompanied the video with the caption, ‘Every round away from home is an unpleasant surprise. And there were many this season. Death wishes, hanged doll, many criminal screams… All registered.’
He continued, ‘But the speech always falls on “isolated cases”, “a fan”. No, these are not isolated cases. They are continuous episodes spread across several cities in Spain (and even in a television program). The evidence is there in the video. Now I ask: how many of these racists had names and photos exposed on websites? I answer to make it easier: zero. None to tell a sad story or make those fake public apologies.’
The statement continues, ‘What is missing to criminalize these people? And punish clubs sportingly? Why don’t sponsors charge La Liga? Don’t televisions bother to broadcast this barbarity every weekend? The problem is very serious and communications no longer work. Not blaming me to justify criminal acts either. You are not football, you are inhuman.‘
The video that accompanied the tweet, which has now received more than 7 million views on Twitter, documents the shocking level of abuse Vinicius has seen while participating in football. Some of La Liga’s most well-known figures have denounced the despicable actions, while others have made an effort to minimize Vinicius’ concerns.
No action taken from La Liga yet
League president Javier Tebas astonishingly insisted Spanish football doesn’t have a problem with racism and labelled Vinicius’ criticism as ‘unfair’. No action has been taken so far by either La Liga or Javier Tebas. La Liga tweeted, ‘If any hate crime is identified, we will take the appropriate legal action.’ It is reported that Florentino Perez comforted the winger on Monday and also explained how the club will defend him.
