Ilkay Gundogan Transfer: Things are heating up between Manchester City and Arsenal off the pitch too. The duo were locked in a sensational battle as the Gunners looked to win the Premier League title this season. It wasn’t meant to be for them as they lost their way at the business end and Man City ended up winning their third PL title on the trot. Now, several reports have claimed that Arsenal is eyeing City’s veteran İlkay Gündoğan this summer. However, the Cityzens don’t seem too keen on the idea though as reports say that they are willing to match Arsenal’s offer for their club captain. By convincing Ilkay Gundogan to accept a new contract, Manchester City is optimistic to prevent him from joining their rivals on a free transfer.
The German’s contract with City ends at the conclusion of the current campaign, and initial negotiations ended without a deal. Barcelona said they would be willing to give Gundogan a two-year contract, but he was waiting for his present club to make a comparable offer.
The standoff made Arsenal, who finished second to the champions in the title fight, aware that they could be able to get him for nothing this summer and bring him to the Emirates.
There is now hope that a solution can be found that will allow him to extend his seven-year stay at the Etihad. The proposal City is putting forth is reportedly structured differently than the one he was given at the Nou Camp, but it is closer to what he was seeking. And if he does, it would be a timely boost for Guardiola, who has repeatedly maintained that he wants the German to stay.
The player was his first acquisition at City back in 2016. Gundogan put them on the verge of a third consecutive championship with two goals in each of his previous two league starts against Leeds and Everton. He lifted the trophy at the weekend despite not getting on against Chelsea. He will be hoping to get his hands on two more before the season finishes.
