Phil Foden’s goal in the 25th minute gave treble-chasing City, who had just clinched their sixth championship in six seasons, the lead despite playing with less vigour than normal.

With the victory, Brighton has earned a spot in the Europa League, the club’s first foray into Europe. Brighton demonstrated why with some exciting play until Julio Enciso levelled for the visitors with a magnificent long-range shot in the 38th minute.

With just over 10 minutes remaining, Erling Haaland, who had set up Phil Foden’s goal in the 25th minute, appeared to have given City the victory when he overcame a series of squandered opportunities to head the ball in at the back post.

To the chagrin of Pep Guardiola, the goal was disallowed when VAR instructed referee Simon Hooper to inspect the pitchside monitor and discover that Levi Colwill had pulled his shirt, helping the Norway scorer.

.It was City’s first winless drip since the beginning of February. With one league match remaining on Sunday against Brentford, City has 89 points, eight more than Arsenal. Sussex has 62.
