Sergio Lobera to Odisha FC: On May 17, Sergio Lobera will begin serving as the new head coach of Odisha FC for the next campaign. The Juggernauts have hired a seasoned management with aspirations to challenge the front-runners after a good season in which they made it to the Indian Super League (ISL) playoffs and won the Hero Super Cup. Having established himself with FC Goa and Mumbai City FC, Lobera is a well-known character in Indian football. The Spaniard revolutionised the Gaurs after coming on board in 2017 and helped the team win the 2019 Hero Super Cup and the ISL Shield the following year.

Midway through the 2019–20 season, due to conflicts with the management, he left the team and signed for Mumbai City FC. Nevertheless, Lobera’s success persisted as he captured the double (the ISL and the ISL Shield) in his debut season.

He accepted a new challenge and was appointed the manager of fellow City Football Group team Sichuan Jiuniu after a successful stint in India. However, Lobera is prepared to return to India in what may end up being yet another tough position after spending one season in China. He has a stellar record in India, having coached FC Goa to a 33-game winning streak and Mumbai City FC to a 13-game winning streak.

Odisha FC has made a commitment to furthering the potential of the team and transforming the organisation with the hiring of Lobera. His success in India will be crucial for the Juggernauts as they try to maintain their momentum into the upcoming campaign.

Josep Gombau, the previous manager of Odisha FC, tried to install a possession-based system, but his squad frequently lacked the final product and were weak defensively. Gombau quit the team following the ISL season, despite the fact that they placed sixth in the standings and qualified for the playoffs.

For the Hero Super Cup, assistant coach Clifford Miranda assumed the position and added motivation and a fresh air of hope. The Juggernauts won their first trophy in Indian football under his direction.

The groundwork for Sergio Lobera to raise the club’s standards looks to have been set after a great season. They also have some young Indian prospects in the roster along with some top players like Diego Mauricio, Victor Rodriguez, and Saul Crespo.

The choice to hire Lobera seems reasonable on paper. He adopts a possession-based approach to football, but more importantly, he develops the team’s players. He is also a tactically astute manager with the knowledge of winning the ISL, who can adjust to any situation.
