Not just the Silver Arrows, McLaren and Red Bull are also planning to roll out new updates in the second half. During the major overhaul in rules ahead of the 2022 season, the cars underwent a drastic change. The new generation cars are fundamentally different from their predecessors, with certain new aspects including the tyres as well. Instead of the regular Pirelli rubbers, the overhaul saw big winglet and an 18-inch compound rubbers.

Initially, the new generation machinery was expected to be slower than the turbo-hybrid era cars, but the result is shockingly different after a years’ gap. Earlier expectations were placing the new cars somewhere between 1-1.5 seconds slower. After nearly a year and half, the current F1 cars are significantly faster than predicted pace. Now, with increasing pace and supplementing downforce, the tyres are sure expected to take a hit.

Pirelli boss confirms new tyres from Formula 1 Silverstone GP

More recently, F1 Pirelli boss confirmed that they will be switching to stronger compounds for the remainder of season. The official tyre manufactures got a heads up on their proposal from the FIA. The cars will don these new rubbers at Silverstone weekend starting 9th of July during the British GP. This is primarily done keeping tracks like Zandoovart, Spa and Silverstone in mind.

In a recent interview reported by Motorsport, Mario Isola, racing manager at Pirelli motorsport talked through this news. He also mentioned about the unexpected pace these 2023 cars have achieved so early into the new era.

“We had a discussion at the end of last year, with the new regulations, that probably they are a bit slower and let’s assume they were half a second slower because of the new regulations,” said Isola.

“But they are quicker because we have one year of development that we have to consider,” he added.
