Coco Gauff vs Yulia Putintseva

World No.5 Coco Gauff advanced to the third round of Internazionali BNL d’Italia with the loss of just one game after defeating Yulia Putintseva 6-0, 6-1 on Thursday.

Gauff came into her match against Putintseva with a 2-0 lead in their head-to-head. The Kazakhstani endured a three-hour duel 24 hours earlier, defeating Viktorija Tomova, 6-7, 7-6, 6-0 in the first round. The fatigue from that effort was evident against Gauff, as Putintseva was a step off of her trademark defensive prowess. Gauff responded by overpowering her from the baseline.

Jessica Pegula vs Taylor Townsend

For just the second time in her career, American Taylor Townsend is through to the third round at a WTA 1000 event — and she did it in grand fashion at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia on Thursday with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 upset of No.3 seed Jessica Pegula.

Sofia Kenin picked up her biggest career win since her Grand Slam breakthrough, surprising World No.2 Aryna Sabalenka 7-6(4), 6-2 in their second-round showdown at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia on Thursday.

In the clash between major winners, it was 2020 Australian Open titlist Kenin who prevailed over reigning Australian Open champion Sabalenka in 1 hour and 38 minutes and won a match in Rome for the first time since 2019.
