Dzeko and Mkhitaryan’s goals for Inter gave them the lead after just 11 minutes on a big night for Italian football at the San Siro. Rafael Leao’s absence was a major blow to the home team even before the game began since he was unable to fully recover from a thigh injury. Inter’s impact was felt during a devastating first-half performance as they played with intent and punch without him.

Had VAR not controversially reversed an on-field penalty judgement for a foul by Simon Kjaer on the superb Lautaro Martinez despite what appeared to be clear contact on the Inter striker, the score may have been by a larger margin.

After the interval, AC Milan improved—they couldn’t have played worse—but only a Sandro Tonali shot that hit the post really put Inter, who always carried a danger on the break, to the test.

Hosts Milan had no shots on goal in the first half and were shell-shocked. After the interval, they continued to attack with more vigour, but they were unable to generate many clear chances. Strikes from Brahim Diaz and Junior Messias missed the goal, while Sandro Tonali struck the post.

Milan reacted as Junior Messias blew a golden opportunity to score when through on goal and Brahim Diaz curled narrowly wide from 20 yards. Then Tonali’s effort cannoned against the base of the left post as it appeared like the home team would not score that evening.

For the second leg of the semi-final on Tuesday, Inter has the benefit of playing in front of their own supporters, back at the San Siro. In the final, the victorious team will face either Real Madrid or Manchester City.
