IPL 2023: After missing Indian Premier League 2023 and World Test Championship (WTC) Final 2023 due to a lower back injury, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain Shreyas Iyer has been seen spending his recovery/rehab time in the United Kingdom. Iyer posted a tweet in which he can be seen alongside Premier League and Chelsea star Ben Chilwell in London. Chilwell gifted Iyer a personalized Blue’s jersey and a chat with him.
Great speaking with you @BenChilwell 🤝 Good luck to you for the rest of season! Top man. pic.twitter.com/qDbnpb4ZRY

Iyer had went to the UK after Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) decided that they won’t take any changes in managing his injury. Iyer had suffered a relapse of his lower back injury after the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. With the home World Cup 2023 in sight, BCCI wants him to make a swift recovery before October. His surgery will reportedly rule him out for 4-5 months and there is a good chance that he will miss the Asia Cup 2023 in September.
A misstep from NCA and BCCI
One has to wonder why Iyer was rushed back to play the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in India after he missed the the series against New Zealand.
Instead of taking the route of conventional medicine, Iyer went after alternate methods. NCA sports science head Nitin Patel helped with acupressure treatment before clearing him to join the team for Australia Test series. But, this remedy did not last long.
Iyer could not bat in the 4th Test as he was ruled out of the ODI series as well. While he avoided surgery for a while, BCCI advised him to see a specialist in Mumbai. After consultation, he was ruled out of the IPL 2023.
Series/Tournaments Shreyas Iyer will miss:
- IPL 2023
- WTC Final
- IND vs AFG ODI
- India Tour of West Indies
- Asia Cup 2023
