As per report from the Times London, as many as six English players have been asked by Indian Premier League sides to quit international cricket and take up a hefty offer to play T20 cricket across various leagues around the globe. The IPL franchise sides have spanned all across the globe distributing their brand name and value in the Caribbean Premier League, SA20 League, Global T20 League and others.

Reports further claim that the meeting with the franchise team owners with the players have been informal in nature. ‘The Times’ report quotes: “Initial discussions have taken place after at least six English players, including some international stars, were approached by IPL franchise owners and asked whether, in principle, they would accept a deal that would make an Indian team their main employer, rather than the ECB or an English county.”

“This development follows discussions among players’ unions around the world about the potential implications of 12-month franchise contracts, which would be a significant step towards the football model of elite players being primarily contracted to their team and released for international duty, rather than the other way around.

“There have been informal conversations between some franchises and players about being available to play in multiple tournaments. That can take a different shape and form for different players. But it should come as no surprise to anyone in cricket that these conversations are happening and that players will have these sorts of options in the future,” Heath Mills, the executive chairman of FICA told ESPNCricinfo.

The country cricket vs the Franchise cricket debate has been ongoing for quite sometime. Though the ICC had initial plans to limit an active cricketer to take part in a number of leagues, an NOC from the concerned cricket board is enough to grant permission to the player to take part in a league.

While it has never been the case that an active cricketer has been a main employee of a franchise based side rather than that of the respective cricket boards.
