Real Madrid: It’s rare to see Real Madrid down in the dumps losing a match by conceding 4 goals. It’s extraordinary to see a mid-table team from La Liga pull it off against Los Blancos. However, that’s exactly what happened when Girona put 4 in the net against Real Madrid yesterday. This could give off a bad omen ahead of Real Madrid’s Copa Del Rey final and Champions League semi-final matches. However, boss Carlo Ancelotti has apologised and assured the fans that only good things are ahead. Follow La Liga LIVE Updates on InsideSport.IN.

Real Madrid took on the Catalunyan club, Girona last night in the hopes of lowering the point gaps with another Catalunyan club, the league-leaders Barcelona. However, in the absence of star striker Karim Benzema and goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, Los Blancos was humiliated by one player from the Girona side, Valentin Castellanos. He scored 4 goals alone against Real Madrid as Madrid managed to score only 2.

After this terrible performance, Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti had a message to the fans, “It’s tough because when you lose it must be tough. The match was bad in defence. And that was the key, because we did well on the ball, especially at the beginning. But we were not convincing in the duels, we were caught in two counter-attacks, and from there, everything became more difficult.”

Before this defeat, in their last seven matches, Real Madrid managed to keep six clean sheets throughout all competitions. They also only conceded 24 goals in 30 La Liga matches before this. Hence, they were solid in terms of defense and it provided results. However, even though two of their key players were absent yesterday, it was still their defense that failed them and Castellanos took advantage of that.

Ancelotti said, “I understand that the fans are hurt, we apologise. We are also hurt. But the fans know that we will be fine in the cup final, as well as in the semi-final (against City). It’s harder to say today, but this match does not represent Madrid. We apologise, but we must look ahead.”

Real Madrid have two more La Liga matches against Almeria at home and Real Sociedad on the road respectively before they become ready for war. Their third next match is the Copa Del Rey final against Osasuna and fourth next is the Champions League semi-final first-leg match against Manchester City. Los Blancos have not been in their best form in domestic competitions throughout the season.

At this stage of the competition, losing their form and losing like this could cost them a lot more than their position in the La Liga table. Even though Real Madrid won 0-2 against Osasuna at El Sadar, Osasuna managed to hold them off at Santiago Bernabeu with 10 men back in October. Additionally, if Real Madrid don’t rectify their defensive errors, Manchester City’s Erling Haaland could punish them worse than Castellanos in the Champions League.
