Team captain Hugo Lloris, and Stellini expressed their regret to the Tottenham fans for their ‘embarrassing’ performance. Later the Italian coach was sacked on Monday ahead of this week’s fixture against Manchester United. The interim boss Cristian Stellini lasted just four games after he took full control of first-team affairs following the decision to sack Antonio Conte.

In a statement announcing Stellini’s departure, Levy said ‘ultimately the responsibility is mine’ for the Newcastle defeat but the players have now agreed to pay back to fans who made the trip to North.

Spurs’ players released a statement on Tuesday reads, ’As a squad, we understand your frustration, your anger. It wasn’t good enough. We know words aren’t enough in situations like this but believe us, a defeat like this hurts. We appreciate your supports, home and away, and with this in mind we would like to reimburse fans with the cost of their match tickets from St James’ Park.’

‘We know this does not change what happened on Sunday and we will give everything to put things right against Manchester United on Thursday evening when, again, your support will mean everything to us. Together – and only together – can we move things forward.’

Since Antonio Conte was fired, Tottenham has only won once in five games and has worsened. The fixture against Newcastle was seen as a crucial tie in their quest for a top-four finish, but the defeat leaves Spurs with a mammoth task ahead with seven games to be played.

The North London outfit are currently in sixth place in the league, and their hopes of Champions League football are slim, as they are six points behind Manchester United and Newcastle United who have two and one games in hand respectively. Spurs still have seven games left in the season, including a battle against Manchester United on Thursday,  followed by a trip to Anfield to face Liverpool on Sunday.

Ryan Mason is now interim manager to lead the Spurs camp, as chairman Daniel Levy searching for a new long-term head coach.
