WTC Final 2023: Former Australian opener and captain Mark Taylor has backed David Warner be Australia’s first choice opener. Australia are set to face India in WTC Final 2023 at The Kennington Oval in June. Despite his rough patch in test cricket, Taylor has put his in faith in the fellow left-hander opener. Warner had found his mojo after scoring a great double century against South Africa in Australia but had struggled in Border Gavaskar Trophy in India. Warner has an abysmal record in England, averaging just 9.50 Ashes tour 2019 and becoming a walking wicket for Stuart Broad who got him 7 times in 10 innings. Mark Taylor backs David Warner
Taylor told AAP that, he feels the selector would name David Warner in the squad for WTC Final and the first two tests of Ashes 2023.
“If I am reading the tea leaves right, it sounds like they will stick with David for the World Test Championship (final) at The Oval,”
“And if that’s the way Australia are thinking about the World Test Championship, then yes, they have to start with him for the Ashes.”
Australia management had earlier hinted that they would re-evaluate the test squad after the Lord’s Test starts on June 28.
Taylor on who should open with Warner
Taylor backed Usman Khawaja as the second opener and hopes that he would walk out with Warner on June 7 when the WTC Final starts. Tubby also expressed his desire to have a right hand/left hand combination and threw Cameron Bancroft’s name in the hat after he had a successful outing in Shield Cricket.

“It would be very hard to have Usman Khawaja and Warner open the batting and then change a week later for the first Test at Edgbaston.
“My old way of thinking, I always like a right and left-hander combination. So I would love to see Cameron Bancroft get another opportunity at the top of the order,” he said.
“I see (Matt) Renshaw has been making runs in New Zealand (for Australia A), but Bancroft has made a heap of runs in the Australian summer.”
