Casper Ruud vs Botic van de Zandschulp
Casper Ruud did not have it easy aganst Botic van de Zandschulp. However the Norwegian raised his level to defeat the Dutch 7-5, 7-6 to advance to the second round in the tournament. It was Ruud’s fifth successive win following his Estoril Open victory last week.
The Norwegian took a 3-2 lead in the contest, breaking his opponent’s serve once. However he allowed Zandschulp to fight back conceding a break as the scores were levelled 4-4. Ruud then managed to get another break and finally won the first set 7-5. In the second set Ruud began by breaking Zandschulp’s first serve. However Zandschulp broke the Norewegian twice and took a 4-1 lead.
Ruud held his nerves and put on a good fight an broke Zandschulp once. At 4-5 and trailing 30/40, he saved one set point and recovered from failing to serve out the match at 6-5 to eventually clinch a 7-5, 7-6(1) win.
Alexander Zverev vs Roberto Bautista Agut
Alexander Zverev continued to rebuild his confidence on clay with a 6-4, 6-4 victory against Spain’s Roberto Bautista Agut in the second round of the Monte Carlo Masters on Wednesday.
Zverev broke for 3-2 in the opening set and held serve to take the lead in the contest. In the second set, both the players were level 2-2 before Zverev broke his opponent again in the fifth game of the second set.
Bautista Agut, however, stole the German’s serve right back to level for 3-3. Zverev managed to break the Spaniard yet again in the very next game and from then on ensured he didn’t concede any more breaks as the German won the contest.
Daniil Medvedev vs Lorenzo Sonego
The third seed made an electric start to his 2023 Monte-Carlo Masters campaign by defeating the dangerous free-hitting Italian Lorenzo Sonego 6-3, 6-2.
Medvedev moved into an early 3-0 lead with the help of some delightful early touches at the net and he stayed typically relentless from the baseline throughout to seal an 89-minute victory on Court Rainier III.
Medvedev, who has lifted hard-court trophies in Rotterdam, Doha, Dubai and Miami during his recent red-hot run, moves on to a third-round showdown against Alexander Zverev at the ATP Masters 1000 event.
Taylor Fritz vs Stan Wawrinka
Taylor Fritz earned his 50th ATP Masters 1000 win on Wednesday when he overcame former champion Stan Wawrinka 7-6(10), 6-2 to reach the third round.
In an intense battle, the first set moved into the tie-breaker. The American saved five set points in a mammoth opener to move ahead. He stepped up his intensity and level in the second set to triumph after one hour and 39 minutes
The eighth seed reached the quarter-finals in the tournament last year and will aim to match that feat when he takes on Jiri Lehecka after the Czech downed 2022 semi-finalist Grigor Dimitrov 7-6(4), 6-4.
