Williamson’s right leg was hurt while he was attempting to catch a six hit by CSK batter Ruturaj Gaikwad during his 50-ball, 92-run inning. Williamson was able to throw back the ball in time, saving two runs for his team, but in the process, he fell awkwardly outside the boundary line and injured his right knee. As a result, he was unable to continue playing in the match. Sai Sudarshan later took his place during the Gujarat Titans’ batting innings by using the Impact Player rule.

“It is sad to lose Kane to injury so early in the tournament. We wish him a speedy recovery, with the hope of seeing him in action very soon,” said Vikram Solanki, Gujarat’s director of cricket, in a statement released by the club. Williamson will now head home to New Zealand for further assessment and in the meanwhile, the Hardik Pandya-led team will be searching for a bigger figure to replace him.
Williamson was shown the door after a poor season with Sunrisers Hyderabad. While he went unsold in the first round, GT snapped him up at a base price of Rs 2 Cr. However, he hasn’t had the debut he expected. IPL 2023 has already been plagued with injuries. GT will hope that his injury isn’t a serious one. The Kiwi captain has had knee trouble in the past.
