Russell hinted that Mercedes is considering a significant shift in their design philosophy, rather than just refining their current approach.

“We are aware that changing our concept poses some risks. However, we believe we have enough information to conclude that our initial targets were not feasible, and we must pivot as soon as possible. The decision has been made, and we have already started implementing it since last week. The real question is how quickly this can translate into performance on the track”, the English driver said.

Regarding the design of the W23, Russell indicated that Mercedes might have been too conservative, which compromised its performance potential.

We realized that the changes made by the FIA over the winter have solved most of our problems. Nonetheless, we can recover some of the lost performance by being less conservative.”
