WPL 2023: South Africa’s Marizanne Kapp capped off a brilliant bowling performance for Delhi Capitals in the Women’s Premier League on Saturday, 11th March 2023. The pacer bagged a five-wicket haul to leave Gujarat Giants in tatters. The 33-year old’s memorable feat became extra special as she had her wife Dane van Niekerk cheering for her from the stands. The right-arm medium pacer opened the bowling for Delhi Capitals and straightaway got into the act with the new ball. In just the second ball of the innings, she bowled a terrific yorker to dismiss Gujarat Giants opener Sabbineni Meghana. She came back in her next over and took two wickets in two balls to stun the Gujarat Giants camp.
She uprooted the stumps to dismiss Laura Wolvaardt. The South African walked back after scoring just a solitary run in her debut. In the next ball, she trapped new batter Ashleigh Gardner in front of the wicket to give Delhi a terrific start.
She continued her spell and dismissed Harleen Deol and Susma Verma in her next two overs to complete her five-wicket haul. This is her career’s maiden fifer in T20s and it left the Giants reeling at 33/6 after seven overs. The 33-year old finished with figures of 5/15 in the match.
Kapp had her biggest fan in wife Dane van Niekerk cheering on from the stands. Niekerk is part of the RCB squad but is yet to play a match in the WPL this year. Niekerk also tweeted, “5for my nou!!” congratulating her partner for her achievement.

Meanwhile, Kapp’s performance came as a tribute to her wife as Niekerk hinted at her international retirement just a few hours before the match on Saturday. She too to Instagram and posted “You have to accept that some chapters in our lives have to close without closures. There is no point in losing yourself by trying to fix what’s meant to stay broken.”
Niekerk, who was a former captain of South Africa was not selected in the T20 World Cup squad last month. South Africa went on to finish as runner-up in the tournament.
