“In light of the serious accusations made by the Barcelona Prosecutor’s Office against FC Barcelona and two of its former presidents for suspected corruption related to their ties with José María Enríquez Negreira, the former vice president of the Technical Committee of Referees, Real Madrid’s president has urgently convened a Board of Directors meeting on Sunday, March 12, 2023, at 12:00 p.m. to discuss the appropriate actions to take in this matter,” club Real Madrid said in a statement.
On Friday, Spanish prosecutors filed a complaint against Barcelona and two of their ex-presidents. They alleged that Barcelona made payments to a company owned by the senior refereeing official to influence match results. It is alleged that the Catalans paid over €7.3m between 2001 and 2018 to firms owned by the ex-vice-president of Spain’s referees’ committee, Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira.

Notably, this marks the first instance in which Los Blancos has publicly commented on the ‘Barcelona Corruption Scandal’. The Los Blancos previously had not joined the statement released by 40 La Liga teams that ‘rejected and condemned’ the situation.
While FC Barcelona has denied any wrongdoings, if proven guilty, the club might face a ban from the next season’s Champions League. According to UEFA’s clause in its constitution, the European football governing body can punish a club “if an activity has been committed to organize or influence the result of a match at a national or international level.”
