Mumbai Indians faced their toughest challenge yet in the inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League but that did not deter them as they beat UP Warriorz by eight wickets.

Saika Ishaque was the star with the ball yet again, picking 3/33 to restrict UP Warriorz to a below par 159/6. Mumbai Indians were then challenged with the ball as well by UP but Harmanpreet Kaur led from the front to score her second fifty in the tournament.

Her effort saw her win the Player of the Match award. She picked Ishaque’s performance as the turning point, saying, “Saika’s over was the turning point. She has been the one taking responsibility.”

She was also extremely satisfied with the team’s performance. “Very happy with the performance. I can’t be thankful enough, the way we are playing and we are gelling together. This is the best tournament so far.”

MI’s juggernaut continues to remain unstoppable as they have now won all the four matches comfortably, with excellent contributions from their Indian as well as overseas players.

Mumbai Indians made a change in their playing XI for the first time as they brought in Dhara Gujjar for the injured Pooja Vastrakar.

It was Ishaque who provided MI with the first breakthrough yet again as she dismissed Devika Vaidya for just six in the second over by trapping her in front of the stumps by expertly varying her length.

Kiran Navgire then got a couple of big hits away but Amelia Kerr then showed all her guile to deceive her in the flight and get her for 17 after she failed to get a big hit away.

Alyssa Healy and Tahlia McGrath then became the first two batters to score a fifty against Mumbai Indians in the WPL and put on a 50-run stand but MI’s bowlers did well to keep the run rate under check.

It was Ishaque who again provided the key breakthrough as she got both Healy & McGrath in the space of three deliveries for 58 and 50 respectively.

That halted UP in their tracks as MI were excellent at the death to restrict them to 159, something that would have made captain Harmanpreet Kaur happy as she said at the toss that MI would be happy to chase anything below 160.

In reply, Yastika Bhatia got Mumbai Indians off to a very fast start again as she drove Shabnim Ismail for a four through the off side and then pulled her for another four when she dropped short.

Bhatia also used the sweep profitably against spin and raced to 42 before being the 1st wicket to fall after she holed out in the deep off Rajeshwari Gayakwad.

Bhatia’s fast start put MI ahead of the asking rate but they lost her and Matthews in the space of four balls. UP then amped the pressure up by bowling a few tight overs but Harmanpreet and Nat Sciver-Brunt brought all their experience into play.

They saw off the testing phase and put on a 106*-run partnership to see the chase home. Speaking about that partnership, Sciver-Brunt said, “It was brilliant. I thought I should be hitting more boundaries and she just hit four boundaries in an over. That just put a nail in the chase.”

Mumbai Indians will take on Gujarat Giants next on Tuesday.
