Laura Wolvaardt: Giants get much-needed Wolvaardt boost as they seek change in fortunes

Like Mooney, Wolvaardt is one of the most consistent batters in the T20 format. The South African’s addition to the Giants side is a massive boost as the team aim to turn things around after two losses on the bounce. Wolvaardt will likely open the batting at the top Sophia Dunkley. Before WPL, the Protea star played PSL Women’s Exhibition matches on Wednesday and scored a match-winning 53 for Super Women.

Wolvaardt was one of the stars of South Africa’s t20 WC campaign, where they lost to Australia in the final. She scored three consecutive half-centuries, including a match-winning 53 to knock England out in the semifinal and 61 in the final. Wolvaardt had registered in thew WPL Auction for Rs 30 lakh but had gone unsold.  

Giants are currently placed fourth on the points table owing to their win against RCB. They next face Delhi Capitals on Saturday (March 11). In the absence of Mooney, Sneh Rana will be leading the Giants. The all-rounder has captaincy experience as she has led Railways in domestic cricket.
