East Bengal is participating in the ISL for the first time in cooperation with Emami Group. They received two ISL seasons earlier thanks to Shree Cement. The club failed to achieve positive outcomes a total of three times. At the end of the league, they finished. This was the subject of dissatisfaction.

But, East Bengal wants the 66,000+ capacity Salt Lake to be completely filled. Some supporters claim that plans have been made in this direction. A recent Calcutta Hockey League match that was abandoned owing to poor lighting and safety concerns with Bagan leading 1-0 involves opening libraries at both club facilities three days apart and a “scripted” altercation to incite animosity. It remains to be seen, though, how much of it will be successful.
When contacted, East Bengal Chief Executive Debabrata Sarkar said, “As a democratic country, everyone has the right to express their opinion. He can say what he likes. The fans have reasons to be disappointed and the fans know we are in financial trouble playing the ISL. The people we are going to for this financial crisis are using us. We have to be patient. We will get out of here. Various clubs in the world have suffered in this way, we are doing it too. We will come out that way too, we have to be patient.”
East Bengal would, at best, place ninth with 22 points, even with a victory on Saturday. With 34, Bagan could only finish third, far behind ISL Shield champions Mumbai City (46 from 20 matches). The stakes aren’t high for a match that usually decides championships because ATK Mohun Bagan qualified for the playoffs for the third year in a row while East Bengal suffered the humiliation of yet another bottom-half finish (for the third consecutive year).
