Jasprit Bumrah Injury Update: BCCI could monitor Jasprit Bumrah’s fitness during the IPL, including how many overs he bowls in the nets. It has been five months since Jasprit Bumrah last played for India and the wait is set to continue longer. Struggling with injuries, Bumrah is currently rehabilitating at the NCA in Bengaluru. The 28-year-old is now set to return directly for the Mumbai Indians in the IPL. Given his injury record, BCCI are taking a cautious approach with the WTC Final and the 2023 World Cup later this year. Follow India vs Australia LIVE Updates on Insidesport.IN

India’s premium pacer Jasprit Bumrah is all set for an IPL 2023 return. The 28-year-old was earlier called up for the SriLanka ODI series, but a further setback halted his return. Bumrah was subsequently ruled out for the Australia series, with BCCI opting for a cautious approach with his recovery.

The selectors consider Bumrah key in India’s chase for the World Test Championship and World Cup campaigns, and an IPL return is the best alternative. However, given his struggles with fitness, the selectors are mulling monitoring fitness levels during the IPL. The BCCI had recently announced that NCA will keep a track of players’ fitness during the IPL to get a better idea of player workloads.

Jasprit Bumrah Injury Timeline

  • July 2022: Bumrah reported a back problem after the 2nd ODI against England in July 2022 and missed the 3rd ODI. Upon further consultation, it turned out to be a re-emergence of the back injury that he suffered in 2019.
  • August 2022: Missed the ODI series in West Indies. Returned to the NCA after his back issue flared up.
  • August 2022: Bumrah missed the Asia Cup as he failed to recover in time.
  • September 2022: After a two-and-half-month recovery, Bumrah was rushed to return to the South Africa series ahead of the T20 WC.
  • September 2022: After bowling just 6 overs in two T20s, the move backfired as Bumrah aggravated the injury.
  • October 2022: Bumrah was ruled out of T20 World Cup entirely.
  • November 2022: The pacer missed the New Zealand tour.
  • December 2022: He also missed the Bangladesh tour.
  • January 2023: Although he was initially named in the Sri Lanka ODI series, he was pulled out after he complained of a stiff back at the NCA.
  • February 2023: Bumrah was ruled out of the Border Gavaskar Trophy.

Many foreign boards issue conditional NOC to their players, putting a number on overs bowled in the nets and games played.  A similar approach could opt with Bumrah as per Cricbuzz. The MI star has played a couple of practice games at the NCA in Bengaluru but is yet to receive a Green signal.

While it is unclear if Mumbai Indians would appreciate the interference, Rohit will have no problems given he is the captain. The Indian captain, who also leads MI, will have a clear insight into how his champion bowler is faring. Alongside Bumrah, the selectors had handpicked 20 cricketers for special monitoring during the IPL. Whether the same applies to them remains to be seen.

With no domestic cricket apart from Irani Cup, Bumrah will head to MI camp in early March if he recovers from his injury completely. It should be noted that Bumrah last played a Test was against England in July 2022.

“NCA will be in touch with all franchises but there is no specific workload management plan for Bumrah. See, all franchises know how to deal with the players’ workload well. Bumrah is important not just for MI but also for India. The franchise knows that and they will keep his workload in check. We hope to see him return as soon as he is fit before the WTC final,” the official told InsideSport.
