After opting to bat, Australia initially put up a strong fight. David Warner (15) and Usman Khawaja (15) combined for 92 balls and 50 runs for the first wicket. India pacers Mohammed Shami (1/31) and Mohammed Siraj (0/14) were able to extract movement from the Delhi pitch. The Australian openers batted without a loss for the first hour, scoring 37 runs in 13 overs. Their 50-run partnership lasted 84 balls before Shami broke Warner’s resistance, removing the opener for only 15.
After Mohammed Shami (1/31) removed opener David Warner, senior off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin (2/29) dismissed the star duo of Marnus Labuschagne (18) and Steve Smith (0) in the space of three deliveries. Ashwin trapped Marnus Labuschagne (18) lbw in the 23rd over after India opted for a DRS review. Steve Smith was caught behind for a duck after two balls. As the session turned on its head, Ashwin induced a low edge, which was well caught by keeper Srikar Bharat.
