Ahead of the IND vs AUS 2nd test, BCCI Chief Selector Chetan Sharma has revealed some massive secrets in Indian cricket. The former India fast bowler spoke in length about the captaincy saga, which saw Virat Kohli sacked from ODIs and t20Is. Kohli later resigned from Test matches, with Rohit Sharma taking over across all formats.

Chetan Sharma alleged that the entire fiasco was an ‘ego battle’ between BCCI President Sourav Ganguly and Virat Kohli. He revealed that while Ganguly never lobbied for Rohit Sharma, he did dislike Virat Kohli which led to his dismissal.

The 34-year-old had announced he would step down from T20Is before the T20 World Cup in 2021. He later denied reports of Ganguly asking him to reconsider the captaincy resulting in an ugly public spat.

“Sourav Ganguly said that think once, in what might have been a video conference. Virat would not have heard. There were nine people sitting there, not one person. All the people were there… I was also there. All the selectors and board members were there. Either Virat didn’t listen or Virat did. I don’t know. We don’t know, Virat will know,” Chetan Sharma in the sting operation by Zee News.

Kohli made those comments against Ganguly on the tour of South Africa, where he was the captain of the Test side. Chetan Sharma revealed that he gave the selectors a late indication of his decision to resign from Tests. He went as far as calling him a liar.

Chetan Sharma said, “The truth was that there was talk. Eight to nine people were sitting and talk was happening. Ganguly had said (spoken to Kohli). Virat was lying. But why Virat lied, nobody knows till today.

He added, “This is his personal matter. There was controversy in it – board versus player. Virat Kohli felt he lost the captaincy because of BCCI President. He just wanted to get back at Sourav that’s why he did it.”

It is fair to say the sting operation has ruffled a few feathers. The serious nature of claims while Australia is on a tour of India has left the world’s richest cricket board embarrassed. It should be noted that Chetan and the entire selection committee were fired by the BCCI following a disappointing T20 WC campaign.

However, BCCI reappointed the former World Cupper as the chairman of selectors after a month. Now, with the discontent among cricketers, it is likely that he will be shown the door again.

“His days are obviously numbered. It will be very difficult for the players to trust him after his words came public. But it will be decided only after the internal investigation. But there is a possibility that he quits himself. We will know after meeting with him,” the BCCI official said.
