Jasprit Bumrah Injury: India vs Australia – India’s premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah is set to miss another important series as he has not recovered from the back injury yet. The selectors won’t rush his return and his chance of playing even in the three-match ODI series against Australia has vanished. Hence, he will only play directly in the IPL 2023 starting April 1. However, unlike many others, BCCI won’t put in any workload management plan if an official is to be believed. The selectors want him to get as much game time as possible with Indian Cricket Team just a win away from qualifying for the WTC Final. “Unfortunately, he has to miss out. He is close to recovery but not there yet. As we have seen before, rushing his return could be a terrible idea. It’s better that he regains full fitness and joins his IPL team where he will be under constant observation of Mumbai Indians medical team,” a senior BCCI official told InsideSport.

Bumrah Injury Timeline:

  • July 2022: Bumrah reported a back problem after the 2nd ODI against England in July 2022 and missed the 3rd ODI.
  • However, after consulting with doctors, it turned out to be a re-emergence of the back injury that he suffered in 2019.
  • August 2022: While he was supposed to play the ODI series in West Indies, his back issue flared up and he returned to the NCA.
  • August 2022: Bumrah missed the Asia Cup as he failed to recover in time.
  • September 2022: After a two-and-half-month recovery, Bumrah was rushed to return in SouthAfrica series ahead of T20 WC.
  • September 2022: After bowling just 6 overs in two T20s, the move backfired as Bumrah aggravated the injury.
  • October 2022: Bumrah was ruled out of T20 World Cup entirely.
  • November 2022: The pacer missed the NewZealand tour.
  • December 2022: He also missed the Bangladesh tour.
  • January 2023: Although he was initially named in the SriLanka ODI series, he was pulled out after he complained of a stiff back at the NCA.
  • February 2023: Bumrah was ruled out of the Border Gavaskar Trophy.

No Workload Management Plan for Bumrah? – However, the player who set the notion for a workload management plan even during IPL, is unlikely to have any for himself. While many franchises objected to workload management during IPL, BCCI issued a diktat saying that franchises will need to work with the NCA on setting a workload plan.

During the entire IPL 2023 season, players, who have been shortlisted for World Cup 2023, will be monitored closely, especially the pacers. But Bumrah is expected to play the entire tournament. With no domestic cricket apart from Irani Cup, Bumrah will head to MI camp in early March if he recovers from his injury completely. It should be noted that Bumrah last played a Test was against England in July 2022.

“NCA will be in touch with all franchises but there is no specific workload management plan for Bumrah. See, all franchises know how to deal with the players’ workload well. Bumrah is important not just for MI but also for India. The franchise knows that and they will keep his workload in check. We hope to see him return as soon as he is fit before the WTC final,” the official told InsideSport.
