Like his old comrade and friend Khabib Nurmagomedov, the retired former UFC lightweight champion, Makhachev will now be regarded as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. At his retirement, Khabib Nurmagomedov was ranked first in the UFC men’s pound-for-pound rankings. He remained there until his title vacation in March 2021, when he was deposed.

Volkanovski, the UFC featherweight champion, entered the battle ranked No. 1 pound-for-pound in the entire world by ESPN. He was competing in his nation. He was moving up against Makhachev, who entered as the No. 2 contender. Regardless of weight category, the two best combats in the world engaged in a fight for the first time in MMA history.

His initial title defense was this one against Volkanovski. The Dagestan, Russia, native holds the longest active winning run in the UFC with 12 straight victories. Since his second UFC match in 2015, Makhachev, 31, has gone undefeated.
