A joint bid by Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, and Paraguay has been made to host the FIFA World Cup in 2030. For the centennial edition, which will take place 100 years after Uruguay hosted and won the first World Cup, the four South American nations seek to bring the competition “home”.

“It’s right for the World Cup to be hosted where it all began, 100 years later.” said Ignacio Alonso, head of the Uruguayan Football Association.
Already, Spain and Portugal have declared their intention to host the competition together. FIFA will choose the 2030 host nation in 2024.

The United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland decided against making their own proposal and instead chose to compete for the right to host the men’s European Championships in 2028. Thirteen teams representing three confederations competed in the inaugural FIFA World Cup in July 1930 in Montevideo, Uruguay. On Wednesday, July 30, the final was held. In front of close to 70,000 spectators, the hosts overcame a 2-1 deficit to defeat Argentina 4-2 in the final.

Qatar hosted the 2022 competition last year. The competition will be held in three countries for the second time in 2026 with Canada, Mexico, and the United States serving as joint hosts (2002, Japan and South Korea).
