19-year old Tanya Hemnath won her career’s second International challenge title on Sunday. She defeated fellow Indian Tasnim Mir, who was the top seed 21-7, 21-11 in straight games to win the title. During the medals ceremony, Tanya Hemnath was asked to get onto the podium only with a headscarf (hijab).

Iran  is currently in turmoil due to the anti-hijab protests from the women of the country. Iranian women are protesting for several months against the nation’s law that has made it compulsory for them to wear the headscarfs. Irrespective of the protests, the organisers of the Iran Fijr International has made it mandatory for players from other countries as well to wear the hijab before collecting the medals.

The players however faced no such restrictions during the matches. “The prospectus talked about the clothing rules in the Badminton World Federation’s competition regulations. It is mostly common in tournaments around the world. While we knew that headscarves were a must when women stepped out in Tehran, there was no particular mention about their use during the tournament,” quoted TOI from a source.

Also the tournament organisers did not allow men to watch the women’s matches. Even the male parents who accompanied their daughters weren’t allowed to watch their matches. All the officials for the match were also women.

Some fans in social media compared the player obeying the rules of the organisers to Indian cricketers refusing tilak on the forehead much recently. A fans wrote ” Our cricketers can say no to Tika and we can’t say no to Hijab. That’s the difference. We are blessed to be Indians.”

After her victory, Tanya Hemnath said that she wore the hijab as a mark of respect to the host nation. With the win, Tanya’s ranking is expected to go up 13 places higher to No.60.
