Wimbledon 2023: Roger Federer close to making surprise return to Wimbledon, BBC hopes to rope in Tennis legend to commentary panel

As per the reports, the home broadcaster of the Wimbledon, BBC is looking to revamp their commentary panel for the panel this year. Federer’s inclusion will give a big boost to the panel following the retirement of  long-standing presenter Sue Barker last year. According to the UK Telegraph’s tennis correspondent Simon Briggs, “talks are at an advanced stage” to get Federer on board.

Briggs further envisaged that Federer can alternate his commetating duties between between BBC and ESPN during the course of the Wimbledon fortnight. “Two different employers would help to cover Federer’s costs, he wrote.

Federer also had earlier hinted his willingness to take up commentary duties following his retirement. “Commentating the odd match or giving back in this way, I guess I could imagine it. Sometimes you watch matches because of the commentary and less about the match itself,” he said ahead of his retirment during the Laver Cup last year.

Federer has enjoyed great success in South London during his 24-year playing career. He is adored by the fans in this part of the world. He was unable to feature in the tournament last year but he made his appearance to the Centre Court to join the celebrations of 100 years of the centre court.

During November, he yet again returning to the All England Club. He posted pictures on his social media with Ian Hewitt, chairman of the All England Lawn Tennis Club.

Federer has won eight titles in the Wimbledon. His last title in the event came in the year 2017. Wimbledon also became his last Grand Slam appearance before his retirement. He last played at SW19 in the year 2021 in which he bowed out in the quarterfinals.
