It was the first contract Gavi signed after the initial professional one he had signed aged 16 in 2020, when he had yet to play for Barcelona’s first team, and it was a bumper four-year agreement with a €1 billion release clause. There was also a proposal for the midfielder to replace Gavi’s current No. 30 with the renowned No. 6 shirt, which was originally worn by Barcelona manager Xavi.

The LaLiga salary caps, however, prevent the Catalan juggernauts from registering Gavi’s new contract, claims Marca. Despite the recent departures of Gerard Pique and Memphis Depay, Barcelona continues to struggle with Financial Fair Play issues, making it impossible to complete the contract to sign Gavi as a first-team player.

Despite their ambitions, the report claims they haven’t saved enough money for the upcoming season, and the club is also in violation of at least two articles of LaLiga’s rules on the subject. Apparently, they are Articles 101 and 93.6. Due to the numerous levers Barcelona has used, Article 93.6 specifies that the club still needs to produce a financial strategy for the upcoming two seasons. Article 101 states that renewals must take the cost of the team for the following season into consideration.
Gavi will now have to stick to the conditions of the contract he signed back in 2020 until at least the summer, which is a severe blow to the Joan Laporta-led club board. He won’t be able to switch from shirt No. 30 to No. 6, as had been intended, and Gavi will hope that Barcelona will be able to sign him soon after they figure out their financial situation.

These issues are not exclusive to Gavi. The club is currently unable to renew the contracts of fellow young players Inaki Pena and Alejandro Balde as well as defender Ronald Araujo due to financial issues. Barcelona, though, is still convinced that they can eventually balance the books and extend the stay of these brilliant young players at the Nou Camp.
It does, however, mean that Xavi is unlikely to be able to add in the transfer market this month, and if Barcelona suffers from injuries and bans, he may have to employ the junior academy further. His team is now in first place in La Liga, three points ahead of Real Madrid, and they also have a play-off against Manchester United in the Europa League’s knockout stage scheduled for next month.
