Afghanistan Cricket Board to be suspended? ICC mulling on TOUGH decision as ACB feeling HEAT after cancellation of Australia series by CA, Follow LIVE updates
Despite the suffering of the Afghan players, the next ICC meeting, which is slated for March, will decide on the ACB’s failure to follow ICC regulations. Any proposed punishment will be primarily motivated by the country’s Taliban-led government’s policies against women’s rights. An ICC representative verified this to Cricbuzz.
“We are concerned by recent developments in Afghanistan and the ICC board will consider the implications of these developments at its next meeting and we remain in contact with other global sporting organisations who share our aim of seeing men and women playing sport in Afghanistan,” an ICC spokesperson said.
Aghan cricketers including Rashid Khan, and Naveen Ul-Haq have already expressed their disappointment after CA canceled the ODI series. By daring Australia to abstain from playing them at the World Cup, Mohammad Nabi further fueled the fire.
“It is not right to mix politics with sports. The same regime was there during the World Cup and why did they play us? Because they wanted two points. They wanted a good NRR to progress in the World Cup. What will they do in the World Cup in India? We will see if they will boycott us there? The reason they have given is not right,” the former Afghanistan captain, who plays for Sharjah Warriors, was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.
Afghanistan Women’s Cricket Team
The ACB’s failure to field a women’s squad, a requirement for full membership in the international organisation, has been taken seriously by the ICC.
A recent move by the local Taliban government to restrict women’s rights and prevent them from enrolling in institutions has made the issue worse.
The conflict between the ICC and ACB is simply one aspect of the issue; another is CA’s decision to cancel its March trip to the UAE for a three-match ODI series that would have been hosted by the Afghan board.
