Three changes are made by Manchester United to their previous starting XI for the Premier League. Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire are benched from the lineup that defeated Bournemouth 3-0 at home, and Donny van de Beek will miss the rest of the year due to a knee injury. Fred, Tyrrell Malacia, and Raphael Varane take the lead. Manchester City makes two alterations to the starting lineup from the 1-0 victory at Chelsea. Ilkay Gundogan is moved to the bench, and Riyad Mahrez and Manuel Akanji are now active. John Stones is injured.

It was expected that City would come out strong after their Carabao Cup loss to Southampton the previous week, but in a cagey first half, it was United who had the better chances.
Throughout the game, the effective Rashford made threats and came close to scoring on minute 34.

When Rashford received a pass over the top of the City defence, the defenders sprang out of their seats in fear. However, as Rashford cut back inside to score, Manuel Akanji kept his own and made a crucial block off the line.

Four minutes later, Rashford was given another excellent opportunity to end the score. He sprinted toward Ederson after receiving a cross from Christian Eriksen down the left side, but a clumsy touch allowed the City goalkeeper to make a save at his feet. The energetic but unsuccessful Rashford then gave the crowd a scare as he went down hurt. Two minutes later, he did return to the field, albeit with laboured movements.

In spite of City’s seeming lack of effort, they improved in the second half and, through substitute Grealish, took the lead at the 60-minute mark, handing United their first Premier League loss at Old Trafford since September.

Grealish had played only three minutes after coming on to replace Phil Foden when he headed in Kevin De Bruyne’s precise cross for his second league goal of the year. However, United resisted and quickly mounted a comeback, beginning with Fernandes’ contentious equaliser 12 minutes from the end.

Rashford was clearly offside when Casemiro passed the ball to him, but he let it go, allowing Fernandes to break through and score past Ederson. Rashford’s location initially caused the goal to be disallowed, but it was later determined that he didn’t impede the game.

Rashford finally scored his goal and gave United the lead just five minutes later. Rashford found space between United’s thin backline to put replacement Garnacho’s cross into the net, sending Old Trafford into raptures after squandering two crucial first-half opportunities.
