In the opening exchanges, Brighton dominated possession but failed to pose a serious threat to Alisson. Trent Alexander-Arnold encountered a number of issues with the vivacious Kaoru Mitoma. On minute 29, the Japanese forward had a gap in front of him but was only able to scuff his shot across the goal.

The visitors had a hard time keeping Brighton in check and appeared to have cracked under the pressure when, on the 41st minute, a flailing Alisson clipped the heels of March in the penalty area. However, a VAR review revealed that the forward had been offside in the buildup, and the judgement was reversed.

But after the break, Brighton was rewarded for their sustained dominance when March scored the game’s first goal two minutes later. Winner of the World Cup Alexis Mac Allister pounced on Joel Matip’s errant touch before passing to Mitoma, who provided a cross that March punched in.

March continued to punish Liverpool just six minutes later, matching his afternoon total with a powerful goal from Brighton’s No. 7. Evan Ferguson slid the ball through for March, who then took it wide and sent a ferocious shot from 18 yards past Alisson and into the far corner.

On the 82nd minute, March took over as the provider as Brighton increased the comfort of their victory with Welbeck’s third goal of the game. Welbeck took advantage of some more terrible Liverpool defence, brilliantly looping the ball over Joe Gomez from the throw-in and firing a low shot past Alisson.
