Selection Decisions for NZ series
- While the selectors had a call with NCA chief VVS Laxman regarding Ravindra Jadeja injury, they did not want to rush his return.
- Instead, he has been picked only for the Australia Test series, that too subject to further fitness assessment.
- The decision to play Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli has been final.
- Both won’t be considered for T20s at least for now.
- No senior players earned a call-up to the T20 series.
- Instead, selectors finally decided to recall Prithvi Shaw who has been in exile for 18 months.
- Jasprit Bumrah is still out injured and will be sidelined for a longer period than expected.
Meet the new selectors:
- Chetan Sharma (Tests: 23, ODIs: 65)
- Shiv Sundar Das (Tests: 23, ODIs: 4, T20s: 3)
- Subroto Banerjee (Tests: 1, ODIs: 6, First Class: 59)
- Salil Ankola (Tests: 1, ODIs: 20, First Class: 54)
- Sridharan Sharath (First Class: 139, List A: 116)
India Injury Updates:
Sanju Samson (Knee Injury): Samson is out with knee injury. While he is continuing his rehab, he will not be fit for the NZ T20 series. Kerala batter Sanju played on January 3 as a member of India’s T20I team against Sri Lanka. However, he was subsequently ruled out of the following two games due to a knee injury.
Jasprit Bumrah (Back injury): Jasprit Bumrah is out for a longer period. While he was named for the SriLanka ODI series, he complained of a stiff back while bowling at the nets at the NCA. As a precaution, he was ruled out. But InsideSport understands that Bumrah is still some times away from earning full match fitness. Instead, he will continue his rehab.
Ravindra Jadeja (Knee): Jadeja’s injury is taking longer than expected to heal. He will miss the entire NZ series. While he has passed the fitness, selectors don’t want to rush his return. Instead, he has been named for the Australia Test series. But that is also conditional. He will only return if he achieves match fitness.
