The love that La Pulga has received has been emotional, to say the least. In the latest attempt to show their adoration, Argentines have taken it up a notch. According to the Civil Registry of the province of Santa Fe, one in 70 babies born in December 2022 has been named Lionel or Lionela. That number has risen to 49 kids in just 30 days.
Before, up to 6 babies would be named that way in September. The number rose to 32 in the months of October and November and that number shot up in December.

Even the other Argentina players are getting their fair share of love. According to the Director of the Civil Registry of Santa Fe, other babies have also been named ‘Julian’ or ‘Emiliano’.
Even though Leonel is more common than Lionel in Argentina, Messi’s mother, Celia Cuccittini, decided to name her son Lionel due to the singer, Lionel Richie. When Celia became pregnant, the song “Say You, Say Me” was in fashion. That’s when she decided that this would be the name of her son as a tribute to the singer.
