His father, Jarnail Singh Gill, was also a referee and his fondest memory is serving as a fourth official in the League way back in the 2000s. But, he must have been a proud father when his son, Bhupinder Singh Gill, became the first Indian-origin and Punjabi Sikh official to be the assistant referee in the game between Southampton and Nottingham Forest.

Speaking about the same, Jarnail said, ‘My wife Baljit Kaur asked me not to be too critical of Bhupinder after the game (Laughs). As a parent, whose son goes on to achieve more than what I could do, it’s a very proud and emotional moment.’

It must have been a proud moment for Bhupinder as well, with his wife and son watching him out on the pitch. Jarnail continued, ‘Bhupinder’s wife Ramandeep and my grandson Harvin cheered for him during the whole game and when the game ended, to see him collect the referee honours in an EPL game was the biggest takeaway for all of us. I patted Bhupinder’s back as a referee first and then as a parent.’

Jarnail must have officiated in over 150 EFL games and also one EPL game, where he was the fourth official. His sons, Sunny and Bhupinder would accompany him to watch the games when they were young. Just last year, Sunny became the first British South Asian to referee an English football League game since his father did in the 2000s. He officiated the game between Northampton Town and Hartlepool. Bhupinder works as a Physical Education teacher at a school in Chiswick and will be resuming his work later this week.
