IND vs SL: India Squad SL Series – The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) unveiled the Indian squad for the Sri Lanka series on Tuesday (December 27). It was an explosive squad announcement amidst all the speculation on the team’s composition and how India will begin their ODI World Cup 2023 preparations. Rishabh Pant’s exclusion from both squads attracted everyone’s notice, which was unusual. Neither the T20I nor the ODI squads contain the captain of the Delhi Capitals. While veteran players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have been rested for the T20 series, Pant’s exclusion was undoubtedly unexpected. It was clear from starting that Pant was in danger of losing his starting spot after his poor performance in the white ball format in 2022. But according to sources by the PTI, he has been instructed to report to the NCA for a two-week knee strengthening rehab.

On January 23, 2023, India will play Sri Lanka in the first game of a five-match series that will include three ODIs and three T20Is. Pant is reportedly suffering from a knee niggle for quite some time and needs to travel to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) to participate in a few physical training exercises.

Since wicketkeepers have to crouch a lot, the BCCI medical team has recommended a strengthening and conditioning session for Pant as he will play a massive role in Border Gavaskar Trophy. His S&C session has been slotted for early New Year (Jan 3 – Jan 15). Hence he is not picked for this series.

But things will turn tricky for Delhi batter if both Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan do well for Men in Blue in the white-ball series.

The BCCI has not yet made any mention of Pant, and it is absolutely unknown when the wicketkeeper-batter would be available. The speculation surrounding Pant will only be resolved over time, but for the time being, given the circumstances, his future in the white ball format is uncertain. As things stand, Pant is not the preferred wicketkeeper for the ODIs.
