IPL 2023 Auction: Hesson feels the RCB squad is balanced, can use impact player in whatever way we can

“One of the challenges was do we need to change thinking because of the impact player rule. Don’t think we do. We can use impact players in whatever way we can. We have enough flexibility within our Indian players to come in there and add options. We might look at one or two players in the auction, who have the ability to change up the game any surface we play,” Hesson said.

Impact Players Rule

IPL Impact Player Rules:

  • “The Captain will nominate the Impact Player.
  • The Impact Player can be introduced (i) before the start of the innings; or (ii) after completion of an over; or (iii) in case of a batter, at the fall of the wicket or the batter retiring at any time during the over (as provided in Clause 1.8 (iv) below).
  • The bowling team can also introduce an Impact Player after the fall of the first wicket. But he will not be allowed to bowl the remaining deliveries of that over.
  • A Player who is replaced by an Impact Player (“Replaced Player”) can no longer take part in the remainder of the match and is also not permitted to return as a substitute fielder.”
  • Impact player cannot be a captain. BCCI will follow ICC’s substitute fielder rule for an Impact player.
  • Teams need to identify the playing XI and 4 substitutes at the time of the toss. Out of the 4 substitutes named in the team sheet, only one player can be used as an Impact player.
  • Both teams are allowed to use one Impact Player per match. It is, however, not compulsory. It is up to teams whether they want to use the Impact Player or not.
  • Impact Player can only be Indian player unless there are fewer than 4 overseas players in the Playing XI.
  • A player who is replaced by an Impact player cannot take part in the match any longer even as a substitute fielder.

RCB likely targets of impact players in IPL Auction – Samarth Vyas, Vasuki Koushik, and Mayank Agarwal. Koushik had a stellar Vijay Hazare Trophy picking up 18 wickets in nine games. Vyas is a hard-hitting batter for Saurashtra who scores runs at a strike rate of 150 plus. In the SMAT season of 2022, Vyas scored more than 200 runs.

Agarwal can lend solidarity at the top and form a lethal opening combination with Faf du Plessis.
