Lionel Messi has been around for a long time, having made his Argentina international debut in 2005. Since then, the forward has won numerous awards while representing Argentina, but he has also experienced some of his career’s most difficult defeats.

Messi became a global icon over his long and storied career and is largely recognized as one of the greatest ever, across eras, if not the best ever. On the night of the World Cup final, he bids farewell to international football, let’s take a look at Lionel Messi’s glorious career so far:

He has won the prestigious Ballon d’Or seven times, which is one of Messi’s Guinness World Records. He is the first football player to win the Laureus Award for Best Sportsman of the Year. Despite this, he battled for years with Argentina’s national team, to add major international titles to his brilliant cabinet.

In reality, after failing to win the Copa América that year, he declared his retirement from international football in 2016.  However, six years afterward, Messi has done exactly what everyone expected him to do for Argentina. He led them to significant tournament victories and a position in the FIFA World Cup final. Messi put up a stellar performance as his side overcame a stoic performance by France to claim the ultimate glory.

U-20 FIFA World Cup

Messi made his international debut at the age of 18 as he helped Argentina win the 2005 U-20 World Cup. He was not, however, named to Argentina’s starting lineup for their first encounter, which was against the United States. Argentina was defeated 1-0, and the coaching staff encouraged coach Francisco Ferraro to allow Messi to participate. Messi then tore through every other squad Argentina faced in the competition.

Argentina defeated Colombia 2-1 in the second round, Spain 3-1 in the quarter-finals, and Brazil 2-1 in the semi-finals after qualifying for the knockout stage. Messi scored a goal in each of the three games. Argentina won the World Cup on July 2, 2005, defeating Nigeria 2-1. Messi’s penalty kicks were responsible for both goals.

Olympic Gold Medal

Many outstanding players of the beautiful game are unable to achieve an Olympic gold medal. However, Messi is one of the two richest footballers to have won it, the other being his PSG teammate Neymar Jr. of Brazil, who earned it at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in 2021. Messi won gold for Argentina at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

His squad won all three games in its group before defeating the Netherlands and Brazil to go to the gold-medal match against Nigeria. Argentina won the gold medal with a 1-0 victory over Nigeria thanks to Messi’s wonderful assist to Angel di Maria, who capitalised on it. It was the country’s second consecutive gold medal in men’s football at the Olympics.
