Arjun’s journey to maiden first-class ton wasn’t easy as he stepped up onto the crease in a trying circumstance. But when stumps were called on the first day, the left-hander did an excellent job of serving as the night watchman and making sure there weren’t any more casualties.

“When I first walked out to bat I had to face most of the balls because Suyash was batting on 80 so it was my job to protect him and play most of the balls,” Arjun told reporters after play ended on Day 2.

The opening session of the second day was all about “giving the first hour to the bowlers”.

“As of the approach today, it was more about the basics. Just give first hour to the bowlers. After we grit the initial phase out, it’s time to capitalise. And time to get runs. As I said, it was the new ball and the new ball would do something. I honestly don’t care how I look, I gritted the first difficult phase out and then I cashed in,” said Arjun.

Arjun also said he wasn’t aware about his father also scoring a hundred on his First Class debut.

“No I wasn’t aware,” the youngster said.

Arjun the bowler has dominated the spotlight for years, while his batting prowess has mostly gone unappreciated. However, the left-hander always had confidence in his batting skills and claims that during his youth, he scored hundreds of runs in many trial games for the Mumbai Cricket Association.

“I always had belief in my ability and wanted to just get set, and once I am set it’s about cashing in and getting the big runs. As I said, just play the first hour out and capitalise.”

“Just play each game and each ball on the merit. For now, just try winning this game,” said Arjun.

After matching his father’s feat in his debut Ranji match, Arjun Tendulkar finished his innings at 120 runs. The runs came from 207 deliveries and included 16 boundaries and two sixes. He was dismissed by Kamlesh Nagarkoti by having him caught and bowled. He also stitched 221 runs stand off 374 balls with Suyash Prabhudesai. Goa meanwhile are in command of the match with 451 runs on the board for the loss of 6 wickets.

Yograj Singh wishes Arjun Tendulkar

Yograj, the father of former Indian star Yuvraj Singh, texted Arjun Tendulkar on Wednesday while he was in the UK for a shoot. The main idea was “Well batted son. One day you will be a great all-rounder. Mark my words.”

Yograj, who is renowned for having been a very strict taskmaster when molding his own son Yuvraj into an international cricket player, claims that he got an unexpected request in September.

“In the first week of September, I got a call from Yuvi (Yuvraj), saying, ‘Dad, Arjun will be in Chandigarh for two weeks and Sachin has requested if you have time to train him’. How could I have said no to Sachin, he is like my elder son. But I had one condition. I told Yuvi, ‘You know my way of training and I don’t want anyone to intervene’,” Yograj told The Indian Express from Sheffield.

According to Yograj, the two weeks that Arjun spent with him was like a boot camp.

“I had told him that he must forget he is Sachin Tendulkar’s son for the next 15 days. I feel he was mollycoddled by coaches because he is Tendulkar’s son. I told him that he needs to get out of his father’s shadow,” Yograj said.
