WIPL Media Rights: Unlike IPL, BCCI sets no reserve price for Women’s IPL five-year tender, tournament kicks off March 3 – Check details
As per Cricbuzz, BCCI has made the first move on Women’s IPL 2023. The Indian board has released the tender for Media Rights on Friday. With Disney-Star, Viacom18, Sony Sports Network all interested, BCCI will expect another round of windfall. Similar to IPL Media Rights, broadcasters will bag WIPL Media Rights for a 5-year period.
The Indian cricket board however has set no base price for the bid. In fact, the BCCI has clarified that it is not necessary that the highest bid wins. BCCI will consider a bid in the best interest of themselves and the women’s league. The bidding will be a closed affair, while no consortium or a joint venture are allowed to participate.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is offering three packages for the Women’s Indian Premier League (WIPL) and says it is not necessarily obliged to accept the highest bid. It may consider a bid that is in the best interest of the BCCI. The bids are sought for five years and the bidding will be a closed affair.

It should be noted that BCCI pocketed Rs 48,390 crore from the sale of IPL Media Rights. With IPL 2008 Media Rights going for Rs 8,200 Crore, BCCI can expect similar figures for Women’s IPL Media Rights. The expected number of games are expected to vary from 132 to 134 in five seasons. The BCCI is looking for bidders on a per-match, per-season basis.
There are no packages specified for Indian subcontinent, with all being global deals. There are three packages on offer, with A being TV Rights, B being Digital and C being the combined rights. The fee for the combined rights has to be bigger than the A+B sale.
The usual suspects are Star Sports, Viacom 18, Sony Sports and Zee TV are all interested in WIPL rights. Star Sports bagged the Broadcast rights for IPL< while Viacom18 clinched the digital rights deal. It is unclear whether FanCode and Amazon Prime are in the mix.
WIPL 2023: All you need to know:
- BCCI is set to roll out a tender document to the franchises willing to buy the teams.
- The base price is $50 million or Rs 400 Cr, close to the IPL franchise fee in 2008.
- However, instead of giving first preference to IPL teams, BCCI will float a tender open to all interested parties.
- With this, new players can also outbid IPL franchises.
- The BCCI will also float a separate tender for the e-auction of the broadcast rights.
- The BCCI is also busy seeking the availability of leading women’s cricketers around the world.
- As per a News18 report, the BCCI has already begun signing contracts with India as well as overseas players.
- The move will help to confirm foreign players’ availability in Women’s IPL.
- This central contract will further lead to an agreement with the franchise, once the team decides to buy the player.
- Initially, the players will undergo a draft instead of auction in place for the men’s IPL.
- Like the men’s IPL. Four overseas players will play in the eleven and a squad can have a maximum of 18 players.
Last month, the BCCI approved a five-team WIPL at the AGM. The board also finalised a 22-match format for the tournament. Existing men’s IPL franchises too have shown interest in acquiring the franchises. However, till now the stakeholders are undecided on how to distribute the franchises.
“We will be interested in purchasing a Women’s IPL team once we get information on the due process. We have not received any intimation from BCCI so far,” a CSK official had earlier told InsideSport.
